Tuesday and Wednesday
10 am to 2 pm

2 pm to 5.30 pm
Closed on holidays

In The Name of Love

Love was and is one of the principal themes in art. Humans have a need to express love, and the pain of love, in a tangible form. Literature, music, paintings and sculptures created over the centuries are testimony of their never-ending attempts. The exhibition at the Alexander Tutsek Foundation deals with the many facets of love from a very special perspective: not only the bright, the welcome part of love is explored, but so is its hidden, secretive, and dark side. And all this is expressed using a material that is seldom seen in art displays. On show are 30 objects created by 26 artists from around the world who work mainly with glass and mixed media.

Goblets Galore - Espace Verre - February 16 through May 4 Wed, 01 Feb 2012 07:32:10 -0700 Goblets Galore

When art redefines the drinking glass

Opening Reception February 16, 2012,
at 6:30 p.m.

Montreal, January 31, 2012 – From February 16 through May 4, 2012, Espace VERRE Gallery presents the Goblets Galore exhibition, an expanded view of the drinking vessel. For the occasion, thirteen glass artists have gone beyond the scope of the traditional goblet to reveal their own interpretations of the classic model. The opening reception  will be held in presence of the artists on Thursday, February 16, as of 6:30 p.m.

More decorative than functional, purely classical or resolutely original, the goblets on display will surely surprise the viewer. The works of Clément Bergeron, Nadine Busque, Vincent Chagnon and Anne Donzé, Sébastien Duchange, Cédric Ginart, David Goranitis, Hadashah  Hétu, Guillaume Martin, Christine Mayr and Jeff Ferrier, Mélanie Pageau, as well as of Jean-Simon Trottier challenge the orthodox vision of the gobelet.

With Goblets Galore, Chagnon and Donzé suggest two pieces from the Duel de coup[l]e series, works that play on communication issues and on emotions often involved in relationships.  Duchange chooses to take his inspiration from the reduced model for his ready-to-assemble goblet, while Hétu returns to basics with her text inclusions and the Renaissance Venetian glass aesthetic. Christina Mayr and Jeff Ferrier’s installation explores notions of multiplicity and perception, and Pageau’s goblets of life revive the legend of Bloody Mary.

Espace  VERRE is located at 1200 Mill Street in Montreal. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as the last Sunday of every month from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Espace VERRE will take part in the MONTREAL HIGH LIGHTS Festival’s Nuit blanche on Saturday, February 25, from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. The activities of the all-nighter benefit from the financial  support of Nuit blanche à Montréal.

« François Houdé − Mémoire vive » Jan 27 - March 11 Tue, 24 Jan 2012 08:02:54 -0700 «François Houdé − Mémoire vive »

From January 27th to March 11th 2012 | Curator : Carole Charette

Official opening : Friday January 27th 5pm | Under the honorary presidency of Me Marc Bellemare

Conference on François Houdé Sunday February 19th 1pm | By Carole Charette and other guests (Free event. Places are limited. Reservations required before Friday February 16th, at 418-524-0354, ext. 249.)

Quebec City, 01/04/2012 — From January 27th to March 11th 2012, the only artist-run centre in fine crafts of Canada, is pleased to host a pretigious exhibition. Curated by Carole Charette, MATERIA presents, indeed, the first posthumous exhibition in retrospective on the work of the artist François Houdé. This remarkable glass sculptor from Quebec is internationally recognized, but, paradoxically, little known in his home town. Moreover, little documentation exists on his creations and no monograph is devoted to his work. This exhibition, being a tribute to François Houdé, aspires to provide a greater opportunity to discover the work of this monumental artist.

The exhibition, in addition to including a selection of pieces representative of François Houdé’s career, many of the Ming series, is accompanied by video interviews, conducted by the Centre MATERIA. Those, reflecting the significant character of the artist and his work.

The opening of the exhibition to be held Friday, January 27th from 17h, will be held under the honorary presidency of Marc Bellemare, lawyer and president of the Club des Collectionneurs en Arts Visuels de Québec.

“This retrospective exhibition on the work of François Houdé (1950-1993) — the first in Québec and the first in Canada since 1989 — aims to highlight Houdé’s unique, complex and iconoclastic multidisciplinary approach. Avant-gardist, Houdé challenges the notion of the "beautiful object" often contiguous to glass art. In an effort to exceed the craft value of glass, and in artistic settings, Houdé has indeed striven to exploit “imperfection” within the material: opacity, matte, texture and fragmentation.

A glass sculptor of international renown, Houdé was the precursor of new techniques for the integration of glass. His artistic productions move away from the traditional fine craft and offer a renewed vision through various series such as: Broken Bowls, Pygmalion, Shipwrecks and Ming. His work is in various public and private collections throughout Canada, the United States as well as Europe.

The artist, moreover, has contributed to the development of his discipline by being co-founder of the Centre des Métiers du Verre du Québec—Espace Verre—which has produced many artists and craftsmen since its founding. His involvement in this outstanding handicraft was highlighted by the creation of the François Houdé Prize in addition to the Houdé-Mendel Scholarship.

This exhibition provides privileged access to François Houdé’s outstanding work. Delicate and light, it is a body of work that captures the essence of the fragility of life. Through it, we enter the private world of the artist, and we discover the richness of his legacy, both artistic and human.”

Carole Charette, PhD
