Laura Donefer Named Fourth GAPP Artist Mon, 08 Mar 2010 09:59:01 -0500 TOLEDO, OHIO— Laura Donefer, who has been using glass as a primary medium in her work for more than 27 years, is the fourth artist invited to participate in the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA)’s prestigious Guest Artist Pavilion Project (GAPP). The American-born Donefer, who now lives in Harrowsmith, Ontario will be an artist in residence from May 14-22, 2010 and will return in the fall to continue her work.

The GAPP program invites one glass or contemporary artist per year to visit the Museum and spend time creating new work inspired by the TMA collection. In return, the Museum has asked the selected artists to give a lecture and a glass-working demonstration relating to their work, both of which have been well-received by the public during past GAPP residencies.

“The GAPP program is made possible by a generous donor to the Museum who believes strongly in public education and allowing these established artists the freedom and resources to explore their work in new ways without any pressure or restrictions,” said Jutta-Annette Page, curator of glass and decorative arts and GAPP program co-administrator.

Known as an artist with a brilliant command of color and attention to detail, Donefer has a mastery of blowing, casting, and torch-working glass. Much of her more recent work is a study of ancient baskets with vivid colors and “handles” adorned with flame-worked beads, as well as shells and fibers. She plans to continue that work in Toledo, while also exploring a new installation of wild, contemporary baskets.

GAPP/ADD ONE

Donefer’s vibrant personality is as colorful as her work.  She is well known in the glass community for her glass “fashion shows”— events highlighting eclectic, beautiful and outrageous outfits made of glass (and some fabric) that were the talk of the Glass Art Society’s international conferences in 2004 and 2009.

In addition to glass, she often incorporates mixed media and—literally—found objects into her work. A confessed lifelong hoarder, her studio is crammed with what she calls “human sheddings, urban remnants, and natural bric-a-brac.”

“Each element of my constantly changing collection reminds me of where I found it and why I love it,” Donefer said. “Textures, patterns, cracks, lines so visually stimulating that I frequently stop what I am working on to stare in wonderment.”

Donefer has exhibited her work worldwide since 1985. Her glass and mixed media compositions grace many public and private collections, including the Corning Museum of Glass, the Tacoma Museum of Glass, and the Museum of Art and Design in Manhattan.  A relentless promoter of Canadian glass artists, she teaches at a variety of learning institutions in Canada, and conducts workshops in schools throughout the world.

For more information and photos of the artist and her work, visit lauradonefer.com. Information on the GAPP programming and the Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion is available at toledomuseum.org

Pilchuck - EMERGING ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (EAiR) - DUE March 15th Mon, 08 Mar 2010 09:36:34 -0500 EMERGING ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (EAiR)
SEPT 20–NOV 12, 2010

The EAiR program supports artists making a transition in their professional life. Whether transitioning from academia to a professional studio practice, taking up a new medium, or beginning a new body of work, artists may find this independent residency ideal for contemplation, research, and experimentation. This residency provides artists with a place and the time to develop a particular idea or project with glass, with the potential for realizing a new body of work or way of working. The residency requires a project proposal, and supports kilnworking, coldworking, printmaking and mixed media but not molten glassworking.

Since the EAiR program is an independent artist’s residency, some glassmaking experience is required, as no instruction is available. Residents have access to many Pilchuck studios, including the glass-plate printmaking (vitreography) studio; plaster studio; fusing, slumping, and casting kilns; flameworking torch; and coldworking equipment. No hot glassworking is available. The residency requires full-time participation for six artists, and residents should expect to participate in communal organization of studio clean-ups, be available to visitors during the auction tour, among other activities. Included in the residency award is a US$1,000 per artist stipend, open studio space, shared cooking facilities, and a private room in a cottage with shared bath. Materials, instruction, food, and travel reimbursement are not provided.

APPLICATION DUE MARCH 15, 2010 - http://www.pilchuck.com/

Espace VERRE Exhibition : Élisabeth Marier - February 18th to April 9th Thu, 04 Mar 2010 09:47:34 -0500 Espace VERRE’s new exhibition : From one balance to another, from February 18th to April 9th, is a retrospective of Élisabeth Marier’s glass art career. About thirty years ago, she developed a very personal visual language with glass. "I like to keep the visual language simple. Its interpretation is subtle... The work communicates through the transformed material and the specific shape, a situation’s energy, suggesting a state of being and a mood ".

Élisabeth Marier studied visual arts in Québec. From1982 to 2007, she perfected her art in Montréal, the United-States of America and France, by learning various glass techniques. Pate de verre and lost wax, glassblowing, sand casting, painting on glass, kiln work and enamels on parisons hold no secrets for this artist. Her art work is shown internationally and she has created diverse architectural and environmental integrations. Also, Élisabeth Marier was an active participant in the implementation of the initial Fine Craft educational program in Québec. She is teaching at Espace VERRE since 1988.

Report shows that as many artists live in small and rural municipalities as in Toronto and Montreal combined Thu, 04 Mar 2010 09:45:27 -0500 The 29th report in the Statistical Insights on the Arts series, from Hill Strategies Research, provides an analysis of artists residing in small and rural municipalities. “Small and rural” municipalities are defined as those with fewer than 50,000 residents. One-quarter of the 140,000 artists in Canada reside in small and rural municipalities. This is almost the same number of artists that reside in Toronto and Montreal combined.

Visual artists and craftspeople are most likely to reside in small and rural municipalities.  Almost one-half of artisans and craftspersons reside in small and rural municipalities, while 35% of painters, sculptors and other visual artists do so as well.

In addition to the municipalities mentioned in the summary (many of which are in Quebec, British Columbia or Nunavut), the full report contains details about artists in municipalities such as Rocky View (Alberta), Corman Park and Yorkton in Saskatchewan, Steinbach (Manitoba), Niagara-on-the-Lake and Meaford in Ontario, Hampton (New Brunswick), Wolfville (Nova Scotia), as well as Portugal Cove-St. Philips and Corner Brook in Newfoundland and Labrador.  Census data is available for the 261 small and rural municipalities with 40 or more artists. They are home to 21,100 artists, representing 15% of Canadian artists.

The full report, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Ontario Arts Council, is available on the Hill Strategies Research website  at www.hillstrategies.com.

Siena was the first centre of stained glass manufacture and design in Italy and Vetrate Artistiche Toscane continues this tradition. The Studio handles original commissions and restoration work (classical and modern stained glass) in both religious and secular subjects.   Fused glass projects are also a part of our production.

There are apprenticeships lasting two months (January - February; March - April;  November - December) and three lasting one month (May, June,  August and October).

Although the scheme is of particular benefit to the beginner and intermediate, advanced and professional glass artists have found the apprenticeship to be useful to enhance their skills and exchange ideas.  We help in finding accommodation, English is spoken in the studio, and intensive hands-on courses are available.

The Toronto Sculpture Garden has been a leader in Canada in the commissioning of contemporary sculpture since it opened in 1981. BACKGROUND:

The TSG is a non-collecting institution that is unique in its partnership between the City of Toronto, which owns and operates the site as a city park, and the Louis L. Odette Family, benefactors who created the non-profit L.L.O. Sculpture Garden Foundation which funds and administers the exhibitions. Exhibitions are selected by an Art Advisory Board working with the director, Rina Greer.

Newly commissioned work becomes property of the artist and may be offered for sale after the conclusion of the exhibition.
