Robert Held Art Glass uses ancient glass blowing techniques to create the one of a kind pieces the world has grown to love today. The process begins simply, with 20000 molten glass on the end of a 'blow pipe'. Decoration with coloured glass is made by using minerals such as copper, cobalt, or gold, and is then applied using techniques developed as long ago as 400 A.D..
Our own intricate designs are formed with these colours as the glass is both mouth-blown and hand formed into its final shape. After being cooled overnight, the artwork is ground, polished and signed. This finished piece of art is now ready to grace your home.
Graduating with a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Southern California in 1967, Robert Held instituted the Ceramics department at Sheridan College School of Design in Ontario, Canada. In 1968, he visited the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, where he was introduced to, and captivated by, the art of glassblowing. He returned to Sheridan College inspired; and succeeded in launching Canada's first college level hot glass program in 1969. This led many Canadian Artists to become skilled in this medium. Robert left the teaching world, and in 1978 started his own glass studio known as Skookum Art Glass, in Calgary, Alberta, operating there until 1987. At this time he moved to Vancouver, B.C. and continues to enjoy much success there today at his studio 'Robert Held Art Glass'
It is a rare talent to conceive and create art that is recognized around the world as among the very best. Such is the talent of Robert Held. His work can be found in many distinguished collections: the Roland Michener, the Indusman and even the goblets in 'The Perfect Setting' currently gracing the table of the Governor General of Canada. Robert Held holds an impressive position as one of the fathers of North America's Art Glass Movement, and his individual creations are simply magnificent. Robert is pleased to offer his current studio line.
