Glass is June Pham's fiery colour palette. Her work originating from a semi-liquid material a thousand degrees Celsius is rendered into soothing colour, combinations and forms. However soothing, June's finished work may appear, she is passionate in her ability to create with glass.
She was born south of the Mason-Dixon line in the heart of Florida, her early years were unmarked by Mickey Mouse and log jams of annual tourists. Her talents in graphic and fine art were recognised through college tuition grants and awards. However, moving to Canada delayed June's pursuit of a career in art. She devoted her energy to art once the needs of her family were met and entered the glass program at Sheridan College in 1997.
June truly found her artistic voice through working with glass. She combined her experience in the Arts with skills learned in college to create glass objects with personal narrative. In describing her work, June says, "I try to create through my glass work a visual statement that is universal in feeling."
She is a graduate of Sheridan College Craft and Design Glass Program and has received a scholarship from the Corning Studio of Glass with Jiri Harcuba, master of glass engraving. For two years, June was a resident artist at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre where she taught glass blowing and executed her own work.
Body language intrigues me
Stimulates my sense of visual literacy
The significance of a body transformed to
A wordless
Ubiquitous language
Personal and unique
An emotion is voiced
In the lift of a shoulder
Or as tense and contorted muscles
In the sway of a stem
And the curl of a leaf
For me, the body is language
captured movement
creates voice,
becomes syntax,
Form Speaks
